The Postgraduate Department of Performing Arts organized a special discourse on “Spiritual Concepts and Icons in Fine Arts” by Prof. K.S. Shantamani, Chief Mentor - The JGI Group at the conference Hall of School of Graduate Studies.
Prof. K S Shantamani, a very well know orator enthralled the audience with her discourse, that showed the incorporation of spirituality in fine arts. It was a musical treat to the ears indeed!
The discourse began with a warm welcome note by Prof. Jaya, the coordinator of the Performing Arts Department. The audience welcomed Prof. K. S. Shantamani with a round of applause as she came on to the dais. The discourse started with a short tale which spoke of a famous painter Holman Hunt. Prof. Shantamani began her talk by saying that the door without a handle from outside as shown in the painting of Holman Hunt depicts that the door could be opened only from within. The same applies to our hearts as well. The Supreme Being, ‘Guru Guha’ spreads the light from within, donning the role of a teacher.
She said that a true artist should possess two qualities – straight forwardness & the attitude to never put down another artist. The objective of any form of art must be to awaken the spiritual energy from the ‘muladhara chakra’ that all humans possess.
Prof. K.S. Shantamani went on to say that as stated in Atharva Veda, there is only one supreme being taking many different forms and there is no hierarchy in Upasana. We as humans pray to the Bhagawan / Bhagavati to attain Aishvarya – the absolute freedom of will power, Veerya – the power & ability to create the world from out of his own essence, Yashas – the incomparable fame, Shree – the inner wealth of positive quality, Jnana – the entirety of knowledge & Vairagya – to be devoid of negative feelings & attitudes.
She said Bhakti comes only by sharing & every artist should seek Bhakti in arts. The highest form of love is also Bhakti & there has never been a conflict between Sringara & Bhakti in arts.
She took the audience to another echelon by chanting the ‘Omkar’ – The symbol of synthesis & unity. She also mentioned a quote by Swami Vivekananda which said that we need more temples for ‘Omkar’ as it is very essential for today’s India.
She also shared her knowledge on Lord Shiva Nataraja, the idol of whom as said by Ananda Kumara Swamy is the best art produced by humans. For Lord Nataraja, the Vishva is his stage, Cosmos his theatre, the Sky his head & the entire galaxy his ornaments. The calmness on his face depicts the central axis of the world & ultimately the dance is taking place in the heart.
She ended the discourse by saying that God is the circumference which does not have an end but its centre exists everywhere & the mantra which connects us with the Almighty is the ‘Ham – sa’ Mantra – the music of our breath.
The entire discourse left the audience speechless & the enchanted audience requested Prof. K.S. Shantamani to share her knowledge and experience more often. The discourse ended with a vote of thanks to Prof. K.S. Shantamani who shared her valuable thoughts on the topic “Spiritual Concepts & Icons in Fine Arts”.

A man of boundless curiosity and a lively sense of humour, his spirit of inquiry and devotion to science laid the foundations for scientific research in India. Hence this day is of great importance for Indian science and scientific community.
As this day attracts many young minds to take up Science as their career and a day to witness the new scientific achievements, the renowned and the most distinguished Scientist Padma Bhushana Dr.V.K.Aatre, Former Head of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), has consented to deliver a lecture on the topic MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical-Systems). Team DRONE from Sri Bhagawan Mahaveer Jain College of Engineering, Bangalore created History by becoming the only Indian team ever to win the First place in Design (Oral+Presentation) and Third Place (Micro Class) in Flying at this years edition of SAE Aero Design (West) 2010 competition held at Van Nuys, California, USA between March 4 - 7, 2010. This year’s event had 44 teams participating from across the globe. Facing stiff challenge from the Americans and Europeans this Indian team outdid the competition and proved that they are amongst the best. The team attributes their win to the Centre for Emerging Technologies the primary research centre of Jain University from where they underwent training and to Mr. Chenraj Jain in whom they found the catalyst to support the same by magnanimously condescending to sponsor the team. Team Drone outshone all other teams in each of the categories of Design and Oral Presentation. SAE Aerodesign Series is an international event held by a professional body Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) in association with NASA and Lockheed Martin. The aerodesign event is conducted at two locations, east coast and west coast of United States of America and features 3 classes of aircraft namely regular class, open class and micro class. The West event hosts 44 teams representing universities from across the globe whereas the East event to be held at Texas during April 2010 would be host to 65 teams. The events gives an opportunity to the participants to gain exposure to state of the art technology, real time design environment and acquaintance of top minds in the field of aircraft design. On-site recruitments also are entertained by top tier companies of the US. The micro class teams were required to make a tradeoff between two potentially conflicting requirements, carrying the highest payload fraction possible, while simultaneously pursuing the lowest empty weight possible. Additionally the system should be capable of being assembled within 3 minutes and of being packaged within a box of size 18” x 13” x 5”. This makes micro class very challenging and unique. In the previous edition held at Atlanta in 2009 this Indian team from SBMJCE became the first ever team from India to win a podium place (Third Place) at SAE competitions and till date no other Indian team has ever managed a top ten finish. The team will also be participating at the International Micro Air Vehicle competition being held in July 2010 at Braunschweig, Germany. Team DRONE consisted of 8 students Chandan Prasad, Darshan N R, Anurag Joshi, Shreyas Reddy, Nikhil Pandey, Shreyas D S, Ravi Theja, George Matthew and faculties Dr. Krishna Venkatesh, Mr. Santhosh M S, Mr Nithin T P, Mr. Krishna Kishore, Mr. Naveen T N and Mr Prajwal S.

The school witnessed a creative event called “Spectrum”, the colours of fun which followed for a week’s time from 5th October 2009 to 10th October 2009. This thought was inspired by two young architects, Arch. Madhuri Kumar and Arch. Shubhada Ravindra for budding designers.
‘Creativity is the simple act of making something new’
‘Spectrum’ is a result of an honest effort to help budding designers develop the ‘right side of the brain’ and ‘Lateral Thinking’. The students experienced and participated actively in various activities viz. Pottery, Mosaic, Jewellery Design, Costume Design, T-shirt Painting, Matchstick Sculpture, Skits, Singing, which gave them an insight on the other forms of art. Activities like designing newspaper bags, plastic bottle sculpture, and 3D posters were introduced to generate an awareness of socially relevant issues viz. save trees, save environment and plastic pollution. The response was overwhelming and the results were outstanding! The event was successful in spreading the belief that ‘every person is indeed a special kind of an artist’.
