Shri R. Chenraj Jain receives Honorary Doctorate Degree

Mangalore University conferred seven Honorary Doctorates on the occasion of its 28th Annual Convocation to eminent personalities and achievers on 6th April 2010. Shri. R. Chenraj Jain was conferred the Degree of Doctor of Literature (Honoris Causa) for his contribution to social work, education and philanthropy. The Convocation was addressed by Dr. Shashi Tharoor, Minister of State for External Affairs.

Shri.  R Chenraj Jain is the founder Chairman of the JGI Group headquartered in Bangalore. JGI is an educational establishment offering programmes from P - 12 to secondary and tertiary levels across the country. His vision of education encompasses not only technical and professional skills, but also life skills that enhance the quality of an individual's life.

He has launched “JGI Life”, a Social Responsibility Model. Under this initiative, several projects have been undertaken to serve the needs of the community. Some of the activities include the Cataract Free Kanakapura Project, School Eye Screening Project, Eye Donation Camps, Relief Measures for Calamities, Awareness Campaigns on Ecology, Traffic and Animal Welfare, voluntary blood donation camps, Mid-day meals for patients and providing amenities in orphanages. More than 20,000 cataract operations have already been performed under the Cataract Free Kanakapura Project.  Jain Vidyaniketan (JVN), a free school for the less privileged children at Kanakapura Taluk, also meets all the basic needs of its students including uniforms, meals, books and other study materials. At present 3500 children from 90 villages are benefiting from the scheme. The deserving students are also given opportunities for taking up further education, by providing free seats at the college level. Some students of JVN have also benefitted from the entrepreneurship incubation centre of JGI.

Under the aegis of Radio Active, Bangalore’s first Community Radio station set up at the JGI campus, numerous social awareness educational projects have been successfully undertaken. Some of the initiatives are sensitization to the issues faced by elderly members of the society, environment, issues related to women empowerment, children in need, animal welfare, needs of the mentally and physically challenged and human rights.

His perseverance and dedication towards fulfilling the vision has won him accolades from several quarters, some of which include Rotary Award for Vocational Service, Indian Medical Association Award for Leading Personalities – Dr. B.C. Roy Award to name a few.
