Film Festival on Human Rights

Jain University ’s Community Radio - Radio Active 90.4 MHz in association with SICHREM, an NGO dealing with Human Rights and Shanta Mahila Samaja held a one-day film festival on 7th December 2009, to mark Human Rights Day 2009 as part of the week long observance of human rights issues.
The film festival saw enthusiastic participants including students, NGOs, academicians, government officials and community members from Srirampura. Over 100 people participated in the event.
In keeping with the theme of the “non discrimination”, film festival did away with the traditional form of inauguration.
The Film Festival was organised to sensitize students and general public on various issues of Human Rights and non discrimination. The participants were urged to be sensitive, responsible and empathetic to do away discrimination and atrocities of various kinds- from communalism, to discrimination against women – rape, dowry, domestic violence, sexual harassment at workplace and discrimination against people with disabilities, AIDS, transgender, caste, creed, religion, language, nationality.
Some of the movies screened during the film festival were In search of Light and Ek Chingari ki Khoj mein.
Shantamma, social worker from Srirampura, congratulated the efforts of Radio Active and said the outreach activities like these helped reinforce community voice while providing an opportunity for students to interact with community without discrimination or bias.
R. Manohar, Head Programs SICHREM mentioned that films being a visual medium can reach out to large audience and film festivals are needed in order to sensitize people.
