Jain University Commemorates National Science Day
08/03/2010

Jain University commemorated the discovery of RamanEffect by the Nobel Laureate Bharat Ratna Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman by celebrating Science Day on March 8, 2010 at the Jain Global Campus. Padma Bhushana Dr.V.K.Aatre, distinguished scientist and former head of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), delivered a lecture on the topic MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical-Systems) providing a valuable experience for the audience.

Dr.Vasudev Kalkunte Aatre is a distinguished Indian Scientist, former Scientific Advisor to the Defence Minister and the former head of the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO). A fellow of the National Academy of Engineering, IETE, Institution of Engineers, Acoustic Society of India, and Ultrasonic Society of India and senior member, IEEE, his fields of interest include Special Active Filter Structures, Transmultiplier Design, Digital Signal Processing, Sonar & Underwater System Design and Defence Electronics.

“We have to think differently to innovate and the current academic environment should trigger it”, said Dr. Aatre while delivering the lecture. He emphasised that technology has its own potential and can be used or abused. “India has 40 percent of diabetes patients. “Why not we design an insulin delivery system?” He elaborated on Micro-Electro-Mechanical-Systems and its wide application. What micro electronics did for electronics, MEMS will do for civil structures, aero structures, space and medical science. There was also an interactive session for the participants with Dr. Aatre after the lecture.

Jain University commits itself to propagate the necessity of scientific research and study among the academic circles. With this view in focus, it would administer a series of memorial lectures on various scientific topics in connection with the National Science Day every year, instituted in the name of the distinguished Scientist Sir C.V. Raman. Eminent personalities from the respective fields would deliver these lectures inculcating the science fever among the student community. Sir C.V Raman Memorial Lecture conducted on March 8 was the first edition of this series.

As science has played a very important role in transforming the society, this day inspires people of all ages to work in scientific fields. This year National Science Day was observed at the University to spread the importance of science and its application among the students and to accelerate the pace of development.
