World Aids Day Awareness Campaign

Jain University along with several NGOs, institutions and the Community Radio – Radio Active CR 90.4 MHz came together to create awareness to general public, on 1st December 2009.

The awareness drive started at Somanahalli, Kanakpura Road. The Golden Husk, Hanuman Seva Samithi, Kendriya Sadan and Sadhana were also a part of it.

Bharati, Coordinator - Sadna who HIV+ shared her experiences of living with HIV virus, the pain and agony of being separated from her children, friends and how she challenged the world and battling her depression. Her friend and husband Ravi appealed to the public to treat people with HIV and AIDS as humans and not be judgmental.

This was followed by a performance of Kamsala Group, a song and drama division of Kendriya Sadan, Government of India which proved to be educative to the villagers on HIV & Aids. The event at Somanahalli was concluded by blanket distribution to the senior citizens. About 150 people participated in the event

At Srirampura, the awareness programme was conducted by Radio Active- Jain University in association with LESBIT, FPA, GAUCG, Shanta Mahila Samaja and Milana (PLHIV Group). Meena from Milana an NGO dealing with people suffering from Aids shared her life experience. A street play was performed by LESBIT, an association dealing with transgender, gays and lesbians who questioned their status in their society. Around 200 residents participated.

Radio Active aired these programmes live on CR 90.4 MHz. The whole purpose of this outreach activity along with the LIVE programme was just not to educate the public, but to empower people with right decision as Community Radio is people’s radio for the community, by the community and of the community”.

The other special radio programmes on air were fitness for people suffering with HIV by Vani Shankar, Nutrition for HIV Patients by Ms. Geetha, Drama on AIDS awareness by CRT and Radio Active.
