Consultancy Projects
The following consultancy projects activities are undertaken by the members of Jain University – Centre for Research in Social Sciences and Education.
South Centre of Lokniti
CERSSE is the South Centre of Lokniti, Programme of Comprative Democracy of the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS) New Delhi.
Impact of Electoral Choices
Undertook a collaborative project with the University of California, Berkeley during the Elections 2009 to undertake a field study of what impacts on electoral choices.
Field Study with UCB
Study coordinated by Dr Sandeep Shastri (Jain University), Dr Pradeep Chibber and Dr J.S.Sekhon ( UCB) The results of the field study have already been presented at select conferences at Harvard University, CSDS, IPSA, APSA and a research book would be published in 2013.
Global Dialogue on Federalism
The Centre has an MoU with the Forum of Federations (Canada) for research collaboration along with the International Association of Centers for Federal Studies (IACFS) . The Home Ministry through the Inter-State Council represents India at the Forum of Federations. A Global Dialogue on Federalism (Project # 152). The Centre coordinated the India segment of the Dialogue. The book flowing from the project would have an India Chapter from the Centre.
Federalism Capacity Building in Sudan
The Centre’s expertise has been sought by the Forum of Federations for its Federal Democracy Capacity Building Projects in Africa. A scholar from the Centre was invited as an International consultant for the Capacity Building Workshop on Federal Democracy for Senior Faculty across Sudanese University held at Khartoum from 7th t0 18th December 2009.
The Centre was invited to assist the Forum of Federations project on Federal Democracy Capacity Building in the Sudan and the Director was one of the International Consultants who conducted a series of programmes for the leadership of Sudanese Political Parties at Khartoum from 4 to 10 February 2010.
Federalism Capacity Building in Ethiopia
The Centre was involved with developing study material for Workshops on Enhancing Federalism Scholarship in Ethiopia in February 2011.
Democracy Enrichment and Constitution Making in South Sudan
South Sudan emerged as a newly independent nation in July 2012. In preparation for this independence the country framed an interim constitution. The Centre was involved with the project in a Consultative capacity and the Centre Director was invited to South Sudan to participate in the dialogue on Constitution Making in May June 2011.
Youth Study Project of the Karnataka Knowledge Commission
The Centre was selected by a process of competitive bidding for a Project on the `Study on Perception Aspiration, Expectation and Attitudes of Students and Youth` by the Karnataka Knowledge Commission. The Survey for the said Project was completed in July – August 2010 and the interim report was submitted on Children Days 14th November 2010. A Conference on the preliminary findings was held in January 2011 and the final report was submitted in March 201. This report is considered as one of the path breaking studies sponsored by the Commission.
Konrad Adenauer Foundation Project On People With Disabilities
Centre Prepared the Report on Status of Implementation in India of UN Convention on Rights of People with Disabilities, Submitted to Konrad Adenauer Foundation, 31 May 2011.
World Wide Web
The Centre conducted the India survey on behalf of the World Wide Web. March 2012.
Survey Research Centre
As a SRC, the Centre has taken up several commissioned projects relating to the conduct of citizen surveys.
Mission10x Project
The Centre’s involvement with the MISSION10x Project continues with the Centre faculty conducted the Workshops across the country. During period under review faculty of the centre have done 543 days of workshop.
Karnataka Youth Policy
The Karnataka Government nominated Dr Sandeep Sahstri Pro Vice Chancellor and Director CERSSE as the Chairman of the Drafting Committee of the State Youth Policy. The research support for preparing the Draft Youth Policy was provided by CERSSE. The Project commenced in May 2012 and concluded by December 2012. The State Youth Policy has now been gazetted by the State Government.
SUPPORT TO SOTH SUDAN CONSTITUION MAKING
The Centre for Research in Social Sciences and Education signed an MOU with the Forum of Federations for its project on `Support to South Sudan Constitution Making - PN 307. The Project involved
- Director of Centre acting as a Resource Person – Rapportuer, Moderator, presenter, for a series of workshops
- Reviewing background reading material
- Preparation of Working Papers in order to help ensure cohesion of the content and maximum possible tailoring to the South Sudan context.
- Draft presentations for modules assigned
The Workshop for the said Project was held in Juba from 11-15 February 2013. The Centre Director was present at the Workshops as Resource Person.
Subsequently the Working Papers was prepared and sent to the Africa Director by 28 February 2013. The same was approved and is in the press.
CAPACITY BUILDING FOR DEMOCRATIZATION IN MYANMAR
The Centre for Research in Social Sciences and Education, Jain University had signed an MoU with the Forum of Federations (The Global Network on Federalism and decentralized Governance) to collaborate in a programme on Capacity Building for Decentralization in Myanmar. The Forum of Federations is based in Canada and India is a partner member of the forum. The project involved a series of Capacity Building Workshops to be held at Myanmar for Political Leaders, Parliamentarians, Civil Servants, Representatives of Civil Society, Organizations and Journalists. Dr. Sandeep Shastri, Pro Vice Chancellor, Jain University was the Chief Consultant for the Project and the Centre provided the resource support for workshop material development. The first two workshops were held in Yangon the capital of Myanmar in November 2012. The next two workshops in the series were held in Taunggyi, in Shan State of Myanmar from 28 - 30 January 2013 and at Yangon from 31 January - 2 February 2013. Dr. Sandeep Shastri was the Chief Resource Person at the workshops which were attended by Senior Government Ministers, Civil Servants, Representatives of Major Political Parties and Journalists.
The workshops covered a wide range of themes which included an overview of Federalism/ Decentralization, Unity and Diversity issues in Federal / Decentralized Systems, Constitutional provisions to promote Federalism / Decentralization, Local Government and Federalism / Decentralization. Each day concluded with a group discussion in which participants reflected on the learnings from global experiences and its relevance for Myanmar. All workshops had translations of presentations into Myanmar to facilitate a more meaningful dialogue.
The participants expressed great satisfaction at the learnings from the workshop and hoped that such workshops would be held at more locations in the country.
HAPPINESS PROJECT
The first phase of the Happiness Index Project that the Centre for Research in Social Sciences and Education (CERSSE), Jain University is undertaking in collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) began on 3 March 2013 with the training of the field investigators who are part of the survey in Karnataka. The survey commenced on 5 March in selected locations of Karnataka and concluded on 15 March. The survey is also being undertaken in Haryana and the filed work there was held in the first week of April 2013. This study is part of a multi-nation study being coordinated by JICA. Mr. Yoshi Takahashi from JICA and Dr. Sandeep Shastri, Pro Vice Chancellor, Jain University and Director CERSSE are collaborating in the project.
KARNATAKA ELECTION STUDIES
With elections due in Karnataka in May 2013, the Centre is collaborating with CSDS and CNN-IBN and The Week for conducting a major Pre Poll study in Karnataka. The study began in the early part of April and is likely to be completed by the third week of April 2013. |
