Bindu Subramaniam - Daughter of legendary violinist Dr. L. Subramaniam and popular Bollywood playback singer Kavita Krishnamurti Subramaniam, Bindu Subramaniam carries with her a rich legacy of music. Stepping into Western and Carnatic genres of music, the 27-year-old singer, composer and pianist created an identity for herself when she released her debut album, Surrender, in April 2011. A big fan of American music, Bindu started performing at the age of 12.
Because of her eclectic music style, Bindu had the opportunity to perform and record songs with world renowned artists such as Al Jarreau, George Duke, Stanley Clarke, Billy Cobham, Larry Coryell, Ernie Watts, Corky Siegel, Matthew Santos, Pandit Jasraj, Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna, Pankaj Udhas, Hariharan, and Remo Fernandes. Her debut album was nominated for Global Indian Music Academy Awards (GiMA) in the Best Pop/Rock Album category. Additionally, the talented musician has also received three Honorable Mentions at the 16th Billboard World Song Contest (2009) for her song 'When it's Dark' and at the 17th Annual Billboard World Song Contest (2010). She has bagged the title of Top 20 Finalist in the performance category at the 12th Annual Unisong International Song Contest (2009) becoming the only Indian to receive this honor.
The 27-year-old spontaneous singer grew up surrounded by great musicians including her parents and violinist brother Ambi Subramaniam who have always encouraged her to follow her dreams. The Jain University alumnus is a pro in Carnatic vocal and Western Classical singing and is well-versed with violin and piano. A regular performer at the Lakshminarayana Global Music Festival, she was named as one of the 12 Gen Next Achievers by Verve Magazine in 2012.
Having performed at the Lincoln Center in New York recently, Bindu is mostly on the musical tour with her talented family. She feels overwhelmed on the response received by the American Music Industry. "To be recognized as a songwriter by American Music Industry giants such as Billboard and Unisong is truly humbling. I am very grateful for the opportunity to share my music with such a wide audience. I am delighted that my music would be singled out from the thousands of other composers and songwriters and honored in this way."
Bindu supervises Subramaniam Academy of Performing Arts (SaPa) and Lakshminarayana Global Center for Excellence (LGCE) in Bengaluru which now work in collaboration with Jain University to offer structured BA, MA and doctorate degrees in music.
