With the highest world ranking of 24 in the International Badminton, Anup Sridhar became the third Indian, after Prakash Padukone and Pullela Gopichand to reach the quarterfinals at the World Badminton Championships. The 34-year old champion is India’s Thomas Cup Captain who also achieved the title of Vodafone Player of the Tie at the Vodafone India Badminton League in 2013.
An alumnus (B.Com student) of Jain University, Anup Sridhar is considered as one of the best sportsmen in the field of badminton in India. He represented India at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, won a medal at the Commonwealth Games in 2006 and also represented India in the 2006 Asian Games.
Proud recipient of Arjuna Award by the former President of India Prathiba Patil in 2008, he also emerged victorious by winning the prestigious Pramod Mahajan All-India ranking tournament in New Delhi in the same year. The Government of India has conferred him with Eklavya Award in 2004 and he received Rotary-Brigade Young Achievers Award in 2008. Later in 2014, the ex-employee of Bharat Petroleum won his fourth career title at the 2013 Yonex Czech International tournament.
Anup has multiple National Championships titles among many other national ranking titles and has won 3 international titles. He has played 2 seasons in the elite division of the Danish Badminton League and 1 season in the 1st division of the French League. Although he could not win many Junior National titles, he made a triumphant mark in National Badminton Championship by winning the title three times in a row from 2004 to 2006. Making his foray into the International Badminton, he enjoyed his first phenomenal success when he won the 30th Hungarian International Badminton tournament in the year 2005.
Among his most memorable wins was beating Taufik Hidayat in the World Championships en route to the quarterfinals on the 2007 World Championships. He has also beaten Peter Gade, Park Sung Hwan, Wong Choon Han, Tien Minh, Shoji Sato and many other top 10 players. Besides this, he is also popular for hitting the ‘Hardest Recorded Smash’ in the game of badminton.
Founder of Anup Sridhar Badminton Academy, the uprising star believes in bringing in the best experts in each field to train the budding players. His immense potential and unrelenting attitude made him one of the most talented players in the country. Having been trained at the Prakash Padukone Academy from an early age, he owes his achievements to Prakash Padukone and U Vimal Kumar.
