Rakesh Manpat - Extraordinary Shooter

Best described as a man of unquestionable talent, this extraordinary shooter broke all the records when he beat his mentor Gagan Narang in the 57th National Shooting Championship in 2013. Rakesh Manpat who was always interested in sports as a kid began shooting in 2005. It was his talented brother Rajesh Manpat who is also a Senior National Medalist in Rifle shooting, introduced shooting to his younger brother. Since then, Rakesh has never looked back and in no time he became a Junior State Champion at the age of 16 by winning all the gold medals at stake. The 26-year-old Indian shooter is a part of Senior Indian Team since 2009.

A BBA graduate from Jain University, he was awarded the Young Achievers Award by Brigade Group in 2010 and was the proud recipient of Karnataka Olympic Association Award in 2011. In 2012, the Chief Minister of Karnataka bestowed him with Eklavya Award for his brilliant performance. In 10m Air Rifle trials for the Commonwealth Games 2010, he was ranked third behind two of the biggest names in Indian shooting - Gagan Narang and Abhinav Bindra. He was also a part of National Cadet Corps (NCC) division during his days at Jain University.

The wiry youngster decided to pursue shooting over joining the NCC and won his first silver medal in the pre-nationals in 2006. Although he came in a creditable fourth for the selection trials of the Asian Junior Championship in 2007, he came out with flying colors when he won his first national gold medal in 2009. He also won a silver medal in the Junior International Shooting championship in Germany making a powerful breakthrough of his career.

Other than Gagan Narang, the rifle prone champion also beat Beijing Olympics champion Abhinav Bindra in an international game and won the air rifle gold in the third match of 39th Intershoot International Shooting Competition in The Hague, Netherlands in 2016. Bangalore-based Rakesh is prepping himself for the World Championship to be held in 2018. When he is not involved in shooting competitions and championships, Rakesh is into golfing and love watching and playing football. An icon for thousands, Rakesh aims to attain supremacy at national as well as international levels.
