BA (Honours) in Music

Why take this course?

Jain (Deemed-to-be University) in collaboration with Dr. L Subramaniam's Lakshminarayana Global Center of Excellence (LGCE) is offering BA (Honours) in music with an emphasis on performance. Majors currently offered are Carnatic singing, violin, veena, mridangam, and western piano. This course will take a holistic approach in teaching music and empower students to become performers with an awareness of global music traditions. This will also help students to pursue their master's and doctorate on similar lines if they are academically inclined. This course will also give an option to students to become music educators or ethnomusicologists. This is a uniquely designed course that will give various options to students both in India and abroad. The delivery of this course will be supported by the team from LGCE including Dr. L Subramaniam and Kavita Krishnamurti Subramaniam, Dr. Meera Rajaram Pranesh, Bindu Subramaniam and Ambi Subramaniam from the Subramaniam Academy of Performing Arts, and Hari Ravikumar, supported by global institutes like the Norwegian Academy of Music as well as other academies in Europe and USA.

What will I experience?

  • Special lectures and workshops by Dr. L Subramaniam and various artists/educators from around the world
  • Kavita Krishnamurti will be conducting workshops in Voice Production, Voice Culture, Singing in Microphones and Bollywood singing
  • SaPa (Subramaniam Academy of Performing Arts), Norwegian Academy of Music and professors of some leading music institutions from USA and Europe will be involved in teaching some of the subjects
  • Indian Music theory lectures will be conducted by Dr. Meera Rajaram Pranesh
  • Mark Harbold will be conducting classes through video conferencing on western music/world music
  • In a first-of its kind, the program will also provide degrees in percussion instruments (mridangam). With this, they can continue to do MA and Ph.D. in percussion 
  • Students will also get an exposure and training in Songwriting, Recording technologies, Ensemble education, Studio recording and entertainment management among other things
  • There will also be opportunity to learn Sanskrit since it will be very useful for the Carnatic music students and also an option of learning a foreign language
