The D-School

The D-School is dedicated to unleashing the creativity of the students through innovative approaches to design education. Comprehensively powered by one of the top universities, the D-School will offer rigorous, studio-based learning that engages the creative students in focused training, interdisciplinary inquiry, and practice-based collaborative learning. At the D-School, the students will embrace change, creativity and critical thinking abilities. They will be empowered to translate ideas into tangible forms both physical and digital.

The D-School would be known for its unique, adaptable academic programs, industry and academic partnerships, commitment to research, and a blended pedagogy involving experiential learning opportunities with the industry.


Dr. S. Ghosal, the Dean of The D-School at the JAIN (Deemed-to-be University), began his career in 1986 with India’s premier Design Institute, the National Institute of Design (NID) and was with the Institute for over 3 decades till October 2015. Until the end of 2001, he was based out of NID’s Main Campus, which is at Ahmedabad.

In early 2002, Dr. Ghosal was transferred to Bangalore with the mandate of setting up NID’s R&D Campus, which became fully operational with 4 PG Programs from mid-2007. In 2010, Dr. Ghosal was a Visiting Professor at the OCAD University, Toronto, Canada

Apart from being a member of the Faculty of Industrial Design, at NID, Dr. Ghosal had also headed couple of major administrative positions such as the Vice Chairman (Training) and Chairman (Outreach Programs) at NID. During 2000 – 2008, he was also a member of NID's Policy Planning Committee.

Prior to joining The D-School at the JAIN (Deemed-to-be University), during November 2015 to April 2018, he was the Director of the School of Design Studies at the UPES, Dehradun.

As far as his Industry engagements are concerned, he had the opportunity of heading more than 30 Institutional Consultancy Projects in the domains of Industrial Design & Ergonomics wherein the clientele included the Ministry of Defence, Indian Railways, Space Applications Centre, HAL, NAL, ARDC, C-CADD, the Indian Navy, Machine Tools Sector, Electronics Industry, ATIRA, IMTMA, BEL and many more. During 2008 – 2011, Dr. Ghosal was a Member of the Advisory Council to the Top Management of M/s LG Electronics India Limited.

He is the only Design educator in India who comes with an experience of being directly associated with the maximum number of Institution Building Efforts in India in Design; - namely, the Craft Development Institute, Srinagar; the Bamboo & Cane Development Institute and its Regional Design & Technical Development Institute, Agartala; the Regional Design & Training Development Centre (Ministry of Textiles), Bangalore and NID’s R&D Campus, Bangalore

When it comes to his International exposure, with a good number of fellowships from The British Council, WHO, ICSID, Governments of Sweden, Thailand, Japan, he represented NID in various academic engagements, conferences and training programs in the USA, UK, Hungary, Singapore, Japan, Thailand, Sweden and Canada.

About Faculty

Education at The D-School will be delivered by accomplished and competent Faculty members who, as Designers possess a wide range of expertise ranging from Textile Design, Product Design, Lifestyle Products and Accessories Design to UI / UX Design from major Design Institutes (including NID and IITs) and Industry.

The members of the Board of Studies and the Industry Advisory Board of The D-School are from major Design Institutes like NID, IITs and from various domains of the Industry such as IT, Manufacturing, Electronics, Handicrafts & Handloom sectors.


The D-School will have multi-prong collaborations with various kinds of Industries and academia - including the manufacturing industry, the transportation Industry, the IT industry, the bio-medical products sector, products for the physically challenged ones, the service sectors, the handicrafts and handlooms sector and the academia - both national and international.

The mechanism & strategic partnership for such collaborations will address at the following:

  • Real-life exposure to students for realistic needs of Design development and innovation
  • Bringing in external contemporary Industry knowledge to class-room environment
  • Joint development of Innovations and New Product Development strategies for a third party


Facilities at The D-School will include Model making and prototyping studio with basic tools and machines for working with materials such as wood, metal, series of plastic material, finishing tools including paint shop, drawing studio, photography studio, relevant software – both academic and commercial versions, preview rooms with editable sound systems.
