Exposure to some of the latest Manufacturing Technologies – 3D Printing / Additive Manufacturing
As a part of the Basic Materials and Methods -1 course, students were taken to a 3D printing/additive manufacturing unit on 8th November 2019, to get an exposure to latest advances in technologies used in manufacturing of products.
Students got an opportunity to understand the process of 3D printing, which is a three-dimensional object being built from a computer-aided design model, usually by successively adding material layer by layer, which is why it is also called additive manufacturing.
The students were exposed to-
The objects that were 3D printed there,
Various fields of applicability of 3D printed objects - medical equipment, satellite parts, thermal plants
The problems that were faced prior to invention of 3D printers
Intricacy and precision obtained when designing complex products.
3D printing machine, operation and design feeding process, materials and finishing.
Exposure to latest Hi-tech materials - Corian material
As a part of the course Basic material explorations – 1, students were taken to a Corian Material Studio on 13th November 2019.
The Studio imports Corian material sheets and manufactures various products
Wall décor art, kitchen platforms, tiles, partitions are few examples.
The entire process of making a product was explained by experts.
Explained about various machineries and chemicals used for cutting, shaping and finishing a product.
The key characteristics, uses and handling specific to the material
Evolution and importance of the material in the design innovation world.
The manufacturing process of the raw material- how Corian material is made, what is it composed of and how it is replicating the natural materials such as granites and marbles and various other advances it had brought to the design world.
