Padma Bhushan and a Jnanpith awardee, Sri.Udupi Rajagopalacharya Ananthamurthy is considered as one of the pioneers of the Navya movement and a professor, writer and a critic of Kannada literature. His novels are a reflection of the manner in which individuals deal with situations that are unusual and challenging. Most of his works deal with socio-cultural aspects of post-colonial India. His work captures the tensions, conflicts, and contradictions of postcolonial societies like India, and it is for this reason that they have become crucial cultural texts that help us understand the paradoxical nature of modern times.
