The Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports was initially set up as the Department of Sports in 1982 to promote the organization of the IX Asian Games in New Delhi. Later, the title was changed to Department of Youth Affairs and Sports to commemorate the International Youth Year in 1985 and then commissioned as a Ministry on May 27, 2000.
To tap into the constructive and creative energies of the youth of the nation, the Ministry pursues twin objectives of personality and national building by promoting sports and related activities. The Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports develops schemes to promote various Government initiatives that are focused on creating infrastructure and promote capacity building for broad-basing sports as well as achieving excellence in national and international sporting events.
Established in 1984, to carry forward the legacy of the IX Asian Games held in New Delhi in 1982 under the Department of Sports, the Sports Authority of India (SAI) plays a significant role in shaping talents in the sporting arena. SAI, along with offering high-level training to elite athletes, hosts several schemes focused on identifying and developing upcoming talents in the nation. The schemes are implemented through various regional centers and training centers of SAI across the country. In addition to that, SAI also conducts many academic programs in physical education and sports.
Though the groundwork for establishing an organization was to coordinate India’s participation in the 1920 and 1924 Olympics, the Indian Olympic Association was founded in the year 1927 and was officially recognized by the International Olympic Committee in the same year. Being the apex body of Indian sports, the IOA is responsible for the Indian athlete’s participation in the Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games and Asian Games (Outdoor-Indoor), and South Asian Games.

The Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports (DYES), Government of Karnataka was founded in 2008 as the Directorate of Youth Services to channelize the dynamism of youth in nation-building activities.
The prime focus of DYES is to be responsive to the aspirations and needs of the youth, fostering a culture of sports and empowering them for a better future. The Department runs several programs and schemes that offer financial assistance, training facilities, infrastructure to list some.
The Association of Indian Universities (AIU) was established to promote university activities and co-operation in the field of education, culture, sports, and other allied areas and information sharing. The body also acts as a liaison between the universities and the Government (Central, State Governments) and co-operate with other universities or bodies (national or international) in matters of common interest.
