The largest University Games in the country, KIUG is aimed at tapping sporting talent who can represent India at various international events including the Olympics. The inaugural edition held at the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) campus in Bhubaneswar, saw over 3,182 athletes from 158 universities participate.
This year, the 2nd edition of the event will be conducted in Karnataka. The majority of the events are scheduled to be held at the JAIN (Deemed-to-be University) campus in Bengaluru and across other venues in the state. With the addition of indigenous sports like Yogasana and Mallakhamb in an endeavor to conserve and promote the century-old sporting disciplines of the country, KIUG 2021 is expected to draw in more than 4000 athletes from across the nation for participation in various games like badminton, table tennis, football, archery, wrestling basketball, boxing, athletics, judo, fencing, kabaddi, hockey, rugby, swimming, tennis, volleyball, and weightlifting.
Envisioning even larger participation this time around, the 2nd edition will see a total of 19 sporting disciplines, two more than the previous year, and will be played at the U-25 age category under the World University Games norms.
University players should look forward to play in the mega competition in the same way as senior professionals look forward to participate and win medals at the Asian Games, Commonwealth Games or Olympic Games. The aim is to continue building on the successes of every subsequent edition of Khelo India Games and create an environment for sporting talent to be appreciated. Also, all participants will get international standard competition environment in domestic competitions in state of the art facilities.
