Book Release of Lal Bahadur Shastri: Politics and Beyond

The Bengaluru release of the book Lal Bahadur Shastri: Politics and Beyond` published by Rupa and Co was organized by the Jain (Deemed-to-be University) Press on 25 October 2019. The book is authored by the Pro Vice Chancellor of Jain (Deemed-to-be University), Dr Sandeep Shastri. The book was formally released by Dr K Kasturirangan, the eminent Space Scientist, former Chairman of ISRO and currently Chancellor of the Central University of Rajasthan. In his speech following the release, Dr Kasturirangan paid glowing tributes to India’s second Prime Minister, Lal Bahadur Shastri. In his address he drew attention to the many statements and anecdotes quoted in the book authored by Dr Sandeep Shastri, which highlighted the personality, style and approach of Lal Bahadur Shastri. In a detailed analysis, Dr Kasturirangan, stated that the book provided useful insights into the politics of post Independent India, especially the brief period of nineteen months that Lal Bahadur Shastri was the Prime Minister.
The book release was followed by a panel discussion at which Dr M.K.Sridhar, well know educationalist and Member, CABE, Ministry of Human Resources Development, GOI and Dr Sudhir Krishnaswamy, Vice Chancellor, NLSIU participated. This discussion was moderated by the author of the book, Dr Sandeep Shastri. Dr M.K.Sridhar highlighted the fact that for the current generation this book was a `must read` as it provided them important insights on post independence Indian history. He highlighted the unique leadership qualities of Lal Bahadur Shastri and commended the author for contextualizing Shastri’s leadership to contemporary political developments. Dr Sudhir Krishnaswamy highlighted the impact of the four years that Lal Bahadur Shastri spent at the Kashi Vidyapeeth to earn his degree and the importance of that phase of his life in shaping his attitude and approach to public life and politics. Dr Sudhir highlighted the fact that Shastri represented a style of leadership that was rooted in Indian values and grounded in `folklore` tradition. The panel discussion was followed by a lively question and answer session in which the audience actively participated. Many of the questions were addressed to the author, Dr Sandeep Shastri who briefly responded to the issues raised. Earlier, prior to the formal release of the book, Dr Sandeep Shastri highlighted the reasons for his choosing this theme and what inspired him to write on the life and times of Lal Bahadur Shastri.
The programme concluded with Dr Krishna Das Nair, the Chancellor of JAIN, who presided over the function commending Dr Shastri on writing the book and Jain (Deemed-to-be University)Press for having organized the release function.
The audience were drawn from a cross section of society and included eminent citizens of Bangalore, its leading intellectuals, researchers in the social sciences, faculty of the university, research scholars and students of the University and member of the general public who were interested in the theme.
