Curiosity, peer-pressure, kick and fun are few factors that pull the youth of today’s world into substance abuse and addiction which affects their overall functioning. Acknowledging the adversities of chemical addiction, Vishwas, the counselling centre of Jain (Deemed-to-be University) organized an expert session on drug abuse by inviting Dr. Jagadish A, a prominent psychiatrist who brings with him 35 years of experience in the field on the 5 January 2017 at the School of Commerce Studies, Jain (Deemed-to-be University).
The session was attended by a heterogeneous group of 120 young adults between the ages of 18 to 21 who belonged to different fields of education. The session was focussed primarily on educating the youth about abuse, the misconceptions that we have about substances and the different ways by which they can help their peers to identify the symptoms of addiction and help them through the process of seeking help. Not merely focussing on a lecture form of session, Dr. Jagadish invited questions from the audience. Students queried about the usage of hookah, the difference between substances and the effects of certain alcoholic drinks that have been commonly mystified as being “non-alcoholic”. The session was well-received by the students who stated that they would be interested in further sessions involving an in-depth understanding of substances.
