On the occasion of National Science Day, the Department of Biotechnology, School of Sciences organized a symposium on cancer awareness on 28 February 2018 for the M.Sc students of Biotechnology, Microbiology, and Biochemistry.
The program began with an inaugural and welcome address by Dr. Varalakshmi K N, Director at School of Sciences. This was followed by the lecture by Dr. Janet Parameshwar, Social Welfare Officer, Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology, Bengaluru.
Dr. Janet discussing on cancer emphasized the need for awareness with respect to myths, fear and social stigma associated with cancer and the importance of symptomatic vigilance. The speaker also discussed the most prevalent cancers in both men and women, and the preventive measures, various stages of treatment, psychological counseling given to the whole family.
The speaker also created awareness about the various Government schemes available for cancer treatment to different sections of the society. The talk was informative and useful to the audiences which concluded with an interactive discussion on different aspects of cancer.
During the program, Dr. Bharath Kumar B, Sports Medicine Specialist, Director of Kinesis Sports Clinic and Consultant at Sports Authority of India spoke on various diets such as Intermittent Fasting, Ketogenic diets etc., and the precautions to be taken while on a diet. He also discussed on the ratio of various components, i.e. fats, proteins and carbohydrates in the diet and their role in body weight management and physical fitness.
The students perceived the session very informative and insightful. The lecture concluded with Q & A session and vote of thanks to both the speakers.
