Neuroscience of Emotions in Everyday Life

Department of Biochemistry, School of Sciences, Jain (Deemed-to-be University) has organized a symposium titled “Neuroscience of Emotions in Everyday Life” in collaboration with Department of Neurophysiology, NIMHANS on the 27 August 2019.

The event highlighted the importance of having healthy minds and the relevance of such programs in educating the present day youth. Dr. Varalakshmi spoke on the healthy practices for youths to adopt to have sound mind, happy and healthy life. She appreciated the initiative of organizing this symposium and encouraged members of the department to organize more such activities.

Primary objective of the symposium was to survey the recent advances in understanding how emotional and cognitive processes interact, how they are integrated in the brain, and the implications for understanding the mind and its disorders. The 8 lectures housed during the symposium reveal the amazing diversity of topics related to emotions, its neurobiology and the judicial system’s role in this domain. Pre-lunch session had five speakers. Dr. Manoj Sharma’s talk focused on the components and theories of emotion, Dr. Ajay Kumar Nair spoke about the cognitive regulation of emotions, Dr. Arun Kandasami emphasized how a healthy brain is to be nurtured and Dr. Madhavi Rangaswami gave an energetic presentation on connection between emotion and decision making. The session was wound up by Dr. Apurva’s talk on cell phone and anxiety. Post lunch session commenced with thought provoking talk by Dr. Justice N. Kumar. He shared his professional experience on managing mental illness derived crimes with an emphasis on laws associated with psychiatry. Following this Dr. Shankar’s talk shed light on the complex organization of human brain. The last speaker, Dr. Laxmi T Rao, took the audience through the physiology behind fear and its memory processing. The symposium was concluded by the vote of thanks by Dr. Bindhu.

Over 100 students and faculty from both UG and PG life science streams have participated in the symposium. The symposium witnessed huge number of questions from participants which subtly conveyed that the young minds are open for discussions with an honest frankness. All in all, the event went off very well and was well appreciated by one and all.
