Syrian Delegates Visit Jain (Deemed-to-be University)

Syrian Delegates visited Jain (Deemed-to-be University) on 19 and 20 January 2019 to build friendly political relations based on historical and civilizational ties, an experience of imperialism and of being colonized, a secular, nationalist and developmental orientation and similar perceptions on many international and regional issues. The delegates were His Excellency Dr. Riad Kamel Abbas, Ambassador of The Syrian Arab Republic, Dr. Waiel Awwad, Advisor to Ambassador, Embassy of The Syrian Arab Republic in India, Mr. Salam Socar, Protocol Officer and Incharge Ambassador’s Office, Dr. Zein Al Abideen Abbas, Researcher, Damascus University, Mr. Zol Feqar Abbas, Chief of Syrian Student Union in India.

The Government of India recently announced educational support in a big way to Syrians. Nearly 500 students from war-torn Syria are getting admission in government and private institutes under the “Study in India” scheme of the government launched in April 2019, according to officials familiar with the development. The scheme is aimed at bringing students from Syria to top institutions in India.

In April 2018, the higher education minister of Syria had met Union human resource development minister Prakash Javadekar who had assured cooperation between India and Syria and that fellowships to Syrian students would be increased. By 2023, the government aims at having 200,000 international students studying in India. Around 45,000 foreign students study here currently. The “Study in India” scheme has a sanctioned budget of Rs 150 crore for two years. A number of fee-waiver schemes for students have been announced, including complete fee waivers to the top 25% meritorious applicants. To extend educational support in India’s mission of helping Syria, Dr. Chenraj Roychand – President Jain University visited Embassy of Syrian Arab Republic and met with His Excellency Dr. Riad Abbas on 15 December 2018 and had 3 hours discussion on prospective tie-ups with Embassy, Ministry and Universities in Syria. The main objective of the visit was to have tied up with Syrian Embassy and Syrian Ministry of Higher Education for Educating Sponsored student and also for exploring the possibility of Academic Tie up for Training Syrian Government officials.
