Dr Sandeep Shastri, Pro Vice Chancellor of Jain (Deemed-to-be University), conducts post-election workshops in Myanmar

With Myanmar successfully completing its historic 8 November 2015 election, the mood in the entire country is one of excitement and anticipation. The Forum of Federations in collaboration with the EBO-Myanmar conducted two workshops in the country in the later part of November. Jain (Deemed-to-be University) has a Memorandum of Understanding with the Forum of Federations for conducting Workshops as the Chief Consultant and Resource Person for the Project is Dr Sandeep Shastri, the Pro Vice Chancellor of the University.

The two workshops were organized in interior parts of the country and were attended by diverse stakeholders. The first workshop was held at Homalin in the Sagaing Region of Myanmar from 21 to 23 November. Homalin boasts of a truly multiethnic population and newly elected Members of Parliament and State Legislatures attended the Workshop besides office bearers of political parties and members of their youth wing. The local host for the program was the Shan Literarure and Cultural Forum.

More than 100 participants were trained in the three-day workshop. The discussion focused on global experiences on federalism and decentralization. The participants drew attention to recent developments in Myanmar and reflected on the implications of the election results on the future of democracy and federalism in Myanmar. The sessions were highly interactive and provided many opportunities for group work and dialogue. The participants were highly appreciative of the efforts of the resource persons and expressed happiness and satisfaction about the quality of the discussions and its importance in the political transition in Myanmar.
