Prof. H S Mukunda

A scientist, who has dedicated himself to the field of combustion, Prof. H. S. Mukunda has significant experience in the field. His contributions to the scientific community has made him an asset to the organization. His works range from successful projects in aerospace sciences to energy in biomass involving the area of combustion. His research interests span from computational and experimental investigations on combustion of propellants and propulsion systems to those on wood and cellulose. He has also several accomplishments in the field of solid, liquid and ramjet propulsion systems. Professor Mukunda has chaired number of critical reviews of solid and liquid propulsion systems. He is currently providing guidance on the development of scramjet engines. His other main areas of work are in the modelling of combustion in hybrid rocket engines and solid propellants and ingredients, combustion of liquid droplets and instability in liquid rocket engines; of propagation of premixed flames with complex chemistry and diffusion; of reacting flows in nozzles and air inlets in aircraft and missiles; of combustion of wood in gasifiers and in stoves; of heat transfer in nuclear reactor system and large pressure vessels of petrochemical complex.

Over the past thirty five years, he has taught post graduate courses on rocket propulsion, mechanics and thermodynamics of aerospace propulsion, introduction to aerospace vehicles, mathematical techniques in reacting flows and fundamentals of combustion. Prof H S Mukunda is recognized as an eminent combustion scientists in India. His work spans combustion process in aerospace and industrial fields. With the same rigor, he has researched thermochemical conversion processes of solid fuels such as biomass and wastes.

Intensive research and development efforts have led to advancement in technologies on gasification of biomass; these have been implemented and systems are being built to be used in service of industry and society. He has taught and researched at Indian Institute of Science (IISc) for over 35 years, published extensively and spoken at numerous national and international conferences.

He has been recognized with many distinctions and awards. The total financial outlay for the projects that he has handled exceeds 5 Crore Rupees. These projects are for Aeronautics Research & Development Board (AR & DB), Ministry of Non-conventional Energy Sources (MNES), Department of Science & Technology, Karnataka State Council for Science & Technology, Department of Space (Indian Space Research Organisation), Aeronautical Development Establishment ADE), the most extensive in terms of effort and funds being AR & DB and MNES.

Additionally, he has been awarded Karnataka Rajyotsava award, DRDO Academic excellence award, Visveswaraya Science & technology award, Om Prakash Bhasin award and has been felicitated by many other notable government bodies.
