JAIN (Deemed-to-be University) Students Participate in an Educational Visit to the Bangalore Literature Festival 2025

Bengaluru, 6 December 2025: The Department of Languages (English Department), School of Sciences, JAIN (Deemed-to-be University), organised an educational visit to the Bangalore Literature Festival (BLF) 2025 at Freedom Park. The one-day academic exposure enabled 37 participating students to engage with celebrated authors, performers, intellectuals, and cultural practitioners.

Held on 6 December 2025, the visit provided an immersive learning experience in one of India’s most prominent literary and cultural gatherings. Faculty members of the Department of Languages (English Department) accompanied students as they attended keynote talks, panel discussions, live performances, author interactions, and book-signing sessions at the festival.

The purpose of the visit was to cultivate literary sensibility, deepen cultural understanding, and expose students to contemporary creative expressions beyond the classroom environment. Throughout the day, students had the opportunity to encounter diverse conversations on literature, identity, personal narratives, and artistic expression.

The experience began with a soulful musical performance by Smita Bellur, a renowned Hindustani classical and folk vocalist. Her rendition of “Aeri Sakhi” introduced students to the intersection of language, music, and cultural memory, offering a unique interpretive dimension to their academic study of literature and aesthetics.

A key highlight of the festival was a widely attended conversation featuring Sudha Murty, one of India’s most influential writers, in discussion with author Vani Mahesh. Murty spoke about her latest work The Circle of Life, touching on values of honesty, simplicity, gratitude, and the cyclical nature of human experience. She further highlighted the significance of empowering women’s voices in literature and public life. Students described her reflections as inspiring and deeply aligned with themes they study in contemporary Indian literature.

Another parallel session, “Being Banu”, brought forward a powerful and thought-provoking dialogue with Banu Mushtaq, moderated by academic Dr Prateeti Punja Ballal. Students who attended the discussion noted its emotional depth and socio-political relevance, particularly its exploration of identity and lived experiences.

The festival atmosphere remained vibrant with the participation of comedian, actor, and writer Vir Das, who spoke candidly about creativity and the process behind his newly released memoir. His session blended humour with cultural critique, offering students a fresh perspective on narrative forms.

Beyond the scheduled discussions, students explored various installations and interactive zones across the festival premises, including poetry exhibits, book stalls, pop-up storytelling counters, and informal author engagement spaces. These interactions encouraged them to reflect critically, read more widely, and connect their academic studies to real-world literary practice.

Speaking about the objectives and impact of the visit, Ms Kamda Singh Deo, Faculty Coordinator, stated: “The Bangalore Literature Festival offered our students an invaluable opportunity to witness literature in conversation with society, performance, and personal experience. Such visits enrich their academic journey by bridging theoretical learning with lived cultural realities.”

The educational visit to the Bangalore Literature Festival 2025 proved to be a meaningful academic enrichment initiative for students of the Department of Languages (English Department). It strengthened their analytical abilities, broadened their literary exposure, and encouraged deeper engagement with contemporary cultural discourse. The department plans to organise similar experiential learning visits in the future to complement classroom instruction and foster holistic development.
