Recognising the Significance of Linguistic Diversity on International Mother Language Day

As more languages become extinct, linguistic diversity is jeopardised. Around the world, 40% of the population lacks access to education in a language they speak or understand. Languages are crucial for individuals and the planet due to their complicated significance for identity, interaction, social integration, education, and advancement. They are, however, increasingly threatened or disappearing as a result of globalisation. Languages vanish, and the world's beautiful tapestry of cultural diversity fades with them. Opportunities, traditions, memories, and unique forms of thinking and expression, all of which are vital resources for creating a bright future are being lost. Every two weeks, a language vanishes, leaving behind a cultural and intellectual legacy. At least 43% of the world's estimated 6000 languages are on brink of death. Only a few hundred languages have been accepted into educational systems and the public domain, with fewer than a hundred being utilised in the digital world.

Since 2008, International Mother Language Day is observed on the 21st of February to promote unity in diversity and international understanding through multilingualism and multiculturalism as proclaimed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). JAIN (Deemed-to-be University), School of Humanities and Social Sciences organized a webinar on 21st February 2022 to imbibe the spirit of International Mother Language Day. The event aimed to create awareness about cultural and linguistic diversity for sustainable societies, preserve differences in cultures and languages, foster tolerance and respect for others, and sustain multilingual and multicultural societies through languages. It promoted the role of the mother tongue to express freely and uninhibitedly. It was recognised that languages and multilingualism can advance inclusion and sustainable development goals. It highlighted education based on the first language or mother tongue, must begin from the early years as early childhood care and education is the foundation of learning. The webinar highlighted the potential role of technology to advance multilingual education and support the development of quality teaching and learning for all. The role of teachers in the promotion of quality multilingual teaching and learning was also discussed.

Students, academicians, research scholars, professionals, entrepreneurs, and homemakers desiring to preserve their mother tongue were asked to participate in the event by sending their sketches, paintings, digital sketches, poetry recitals, dancing videos, singing videos, mono acts, role plays etc. The event began with the emcee, Parisha Dutta, a 2nd semester MA (English) student, welcoming the gathering. Then, Dr. Vidya Rao and students sang Vande Mataram, truly imbibing the spirit of International Mother Language Day. Ms. Bhumika from the Economics Department shared the agenda and objectives of Matru Bhasha Diwas. Major Dr. Rekha Sinha, Director – School of Humanities and Social Sciences and School of Interior Design, addressed the gathering on Vadaiva Kutumbakam. Dr. Greema Michael from Economics Department shared the video sent by faculty members. Dr. Mekhala Venkatesh shared videos sent by students. Dr. Mythili P Rao, Dr. Rajani Jairam, Dr. Arvind Kumar, and Dr. Sreenivasah shared their valuable thoughts with the audience. The event aimed to safeguard linguistic diversity and ensure cultural diversity concluded with the state anthem.
