Enhancing A Dialogue for Critical Review: Impact of Covid-19 on The Indian Economy

Department of Economics, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Jain (Deemed-to-be University), organized a Webinar on the Impact of COVID-19 on the Indian Economy on September 26, 2020.

The outbreak of COVID-19 has impacted nations, which have brought social and economic life to a standstill. Individuals, businesses, and investors are facing the wrath as the pandemic has pushed the global economy into a recession, shrinking growth and GDP. Business leaders, corporations, and various multi-sector industries were bound to make tough financial decisions over the past six months to fight a battle against the virus. Therefore, to discuss, analyse, and find constructive solutions about the impact of Covid-19 on India's economy, this webinar was held to enlighten the students on the same.

The Keynote guest speakers for the event were Dr. Halima Sadia Rizvi, Professor and Head, Department of Economics, JMI New Delhi, and Dr. V.K. Xavier, Professor & HOD, Department of Economics, School of Humanities and Social Science, Jain (Deemed-to-be University).

Dr. Halima gave a historical overview of the Indian economy from the time of Independence to the present and how various plans and measures were incorporated by the Indian government to overcome those crises. She also emphasized the importance of education and financial reform strategies. Dr.V.K. Xavier spoke on concepts such as Recapitalisation and Reprivatisation and instilling of corporate governance into the public sector banks to secure the financial system.

The students who participated in the webinar were Mr. Esha Bharadwaj, 1st Semester, B.A. in Economics (Honours) Mr. Moaz Akhter, 3rd Semester, B.A.  in Economics (Honours), Mr. Pratik Mukherjee, 1st Semester, B.A. in Economics (Honours), and Mr. Abhijith Ajith Kumar, 3rd Semester, B.A. Economics (Honours).

The student presenters spoke about various sectors of the economy like the Automobile, FMCG, Pharmaceuticals, Information Technology, etc. They elaborated on how each sector contributes to the GDP and what must be their role and approaches to combat the pandemic and revive the economic structure of the nation.

 The webinar was highly fruitful and culminated with valuable insights, as it provided an opportunity for the participants to discuss and generate sustainable ideas for revitalizing the economy.

Understanding The Dimensions of Multiculturalism in Education

Department of Sociology at School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Jain (Deemed-to-be University) organized a Webinar on “Multiculturalism in Education” on September 26, 2020

Fostering “Multiculturalism in Education” encourages a learning process that aims to expose students to different cultural background, to embrace diversity and social awareness. Students need to understand how the integration of multiculturalism in education can shape the social, political, economic, and cultural fabric of society. It creates equal learning opportunities for all the students, which prepares them to thrive in an exponentially diverse world.

The keynote speaker for the event was Dr. M.T. Joseph, faculty of the Department of Sociology, University of Mumbai. His teaching experience includes research work, journals, books, and many more with a focus on Sociology of Religion, Political Sociology, and Masculinities.

The session introduced the students to different dimensions of ‘multiculturalism’ by focusing on the origins of the idea in Europe, Canada, the US, and its applicability in the Indian context primarily into the education system. The students also learned about the possibilities of multiculturalism as well as its challenges within education.

Community-Based Research: Placing Community Partnerships at the Forefront

Community-based researches are systematic and organized practices that play an integral role in sociology. In this webinar organized by the Department of Sociology at School of Humanities and Social Sciences at Jain (Deemed-to-be University), the host spoke about how active involvement of organizational representatives, community members, and researchers enhances the understanding of a given phenomenon and supports the integration of the knowledge. He also highlighted how researchers can create a better research design as this style of participation ensures that the actual needs and views of the population in focus are taken into account. The gathering also rendered insights into diverse forms of communities and the process of researching them along with an outline on the various aspects of Participatory Action Research.

Presented by: Retd. Professor Dr.P.S.Vivek  has over two decades of experience in teaching Sociology at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels at the University of Mumbai. He is the recipient of the Indo-Shastri Canadian Institute International Fellowship (2007) and has presented 62 research papers in National and 16 International seminars, conferences and has published 29 articles in several prestigious journals and magazines. He is involved in several NGOs and grass-root level organizations which have kept him involved in academically sound and socially relevant research projects.
