JAIN (Deemed-to-be University) Psychology Students Undertake Educational Visit to NIMHANS Heritage Brain Museum

Bengaluru, 23 December 2025: The Department of Psychology, JAIN (Deemed-to-be University), organised an educational industrial visit to the NIMHANS Heritage Brain Museum, Bengaluru, as part of the MSc Psychology curriculum for the academic year 2025–2026. The visits were conducted on 16 December and 23 December 2025, with postgraduate students gaining first-hand exposure to neuroanatomy and its applications in psychological science.

The two-day offline visit was designed to enhance students’ understanding of the structure and functioning of the human brain, bridging theoretical knowledge from the classroom with real-world neuroscientific practice. A total of 25 MSc Psychology first-year students, accompanied by four faculty members, participated in the programme held at the NIMHANS Heritage Brain Museum between 10:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. on both days.

Organised by the Department of Psychology, the visit was coordinated by Dr Mamatha K, Dr Sonia David, Dr Shilpa Siby, and Mr Finny Sam Thomas. The programme featured a structured guided tour, interactive demonstrations, and expert-led sessions conducted by museum curators and neuropathology faculty at NIMHANS. Students observed preserved human brain specimens, spinal cords, and pathological exhibits, enabling direct comparison between normal and diseased brains.

A key highlight of the visit was a discussion on brain donation and ethical research practices, during which students were introduced to the functioning of the NIMHANS Brain Bank, informed consent procedures, and the legal frameworks governing neuroanatomical research. The sessions also emphasised the interdisciplinary nature of neuroscience, illustrating how psychology intersects with medicine, biology, and research ethics.

The visit resulted in measurable learning outcomes, including improved comprehension of brain–behaviour relationships, enhanced ability to differentiate neurological pathologies, and greater awareness of ethical considerations in neuroscience research. Students also developed a deeper appreciation for the role of museums and brain banks in education, research, and public mental health awareness.

In conclusion, the industrial visit to the NIMHANS Heritage Brain Museum proved to be a valuable experiential learning initiative, reinforcing JAIN (Deemed-to-be University)’s commitment to practice-oriented education and interdisciplinary exposure. The Department of Psychology plans to continue organising similar academic engagements that integrate classroom learning with real-world scientific institutions, thereby enriching students’ educational and professional development.
